Moving is chaotic for humans, but for pets, it can be absolutely terrifying. Their territory is being dismantled, strange people are in the house, and their routine is completely disrupted. Taking proactive steps can drastically reduce your pet's anxiety during a move.
Before the Move
Update ID Tags and Microchips: In the chaos of moving day, pets can easily slip out an open door. Ensure their collar tags and microchip information are updated with your new address and current phone number.
Maintain the Routine: Keep feeding and walking schedules as consistent as possible amidst the packing boxes.
Familiarize Them with the Carrier: If your pet isn't used to a travel carrier, leave it out in the living room for a few weeks prior to the move. Put treats and their favorite blanket inside so they associate it with positive experiences.
Moving Day
Create a Safe Haven: On the day the movers arrive, designate one room (like a bathroom) as the "Pet Room." Put their food, water, litter box, and bed in this room, and place a sign on the door strictly forbidding anyone from opening it.
Transport Them Yourself: Never put a pet in the back of a moving truck. They should travel with you in your vehicle, safely secured in a carrier or with a pet seatbelt.
Settling In
When you arrive at the new home, don't give them free rein immediately. Set up one room with their familiar items and let them adjust to the smells and sounds of the new house for a few hours before letting them explore the rest of the property.
